The roll-out of any new generation of mobile network technology is never as simple as flicking a switch. Much of the current discussion around 5G is about its definition. But 5G won’t truly happen until it can actually happen in the network. Like all grand designs, obstacles need to be overcome in order to achieve that goal.

Like other industry commentators, my fundamental viewpoint is that 5G will be a “network of networks.” Network densification involving macro sites, in-building wireless, metro cells and small cells will continue on the way to 5G. This densification adds more complexity to wireless networks and demands ever more sophisticated infrastructure solutions. Managing these multiple network layers efficiently is becoming ever more important to deliver 5G speeds and throughput.

NFV RoI: The Current Business Drivers for Mobile Virtualisation

If someone were to define a safe bet, it would be on the number of blogs about NFV, its drivers and benefits out there, by far exceeding the actual number of Virtual Network Functions deployed. So please let me try a different perspective.

We have been talking about NFV for more than two years now. There is no shortage of studies and surveys on its drivers and potential, but what can be said about reality? A reality I would like to delineate as follows… To CTOs and CIOs, NFV (and SDN) is something to drool or to brag about: “We will adopt it” or “We have great results from adopting it”, and an occasional “We have been doing it in the lab for ages, so…?” . But as Geoffrey Moore tells us the “Techies” and “Visionaries” don’t make a technology, until it can be recognised by the majority.

Here comes the important part for “crossing the chasm”: How about successfully addressing the key CFO’s question, “Show me the money”?

What makes me feel great about NFV now becoming a reality, is the fact that there are numerous examples globally, where CFO’s have “found the money”, resulting in commercial NFV deployments. Take AT&T Connected Cars or Telefonica’s “LTE in a Box” as an example for revenue increase business case – not just an approved one, but a proven one! How about a cost reduction one like XL Axiata are confidently aiming for . And if you think increased agility is an esoteric one, look at what Aspider or NAKA Mobile can create with NFV, agility does get signed off, so I assume it also pays off!

In the whole discussion, using Geoffrey A. Moore’ “Crossing the Chasm” reference, is it important where to place the named service providers? Maybe as pragmatics – but what is far more important than a classification is the fact that they are doing it – congratulations!

I do acknowledge that there are still many challenges ahead to reach mainstream Mobile NFV deployments– orchestration or  interoperability being one of them (thank you Light Reading and EANTC!), and I am as pleased as I am sure to believe they would be adequately addressed. But that’s maybe another blog some time soon.

Leaving a lasting legacy – 4G/5G Progress?

June is typically a very busy month, with a number of exhibitions to be attended. This year Eirteic attended TM Forum Live! in Nice and LTE World Summit in Amsterdam. The events created some interesting thoughts about how things are progressing around subjects such as: SDN, NFV, SON and 5G.

Given that we are 5 years since the first 4G rollout and 5 years from a 5G roll out, it got me thinking about how we are progressing with the management of LTE. The rollout is happening but how are we managing it? Service Providers are still using legacy platforms such as IBM Netcool and HP TeMIP.

So as we progress toward 5G, how is this going to really change? How do we manage legacy 2G, 3G services whilst maintaining LTE and assuring future 5G services.

Can we really do this using 20 year old platforms?

The 5G World Alliance is partnering with Informa to promote Best Practices in Palo Alto 5G Forum USA 14-15th April 2015 and in the upcoming 5G World Summit 24-25th June, Amsterdam.

The world’s first global organisation dedicated to the development and delivery of the Next Generation Worldwide Wireless Internet – known as 5G – was officially launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March.

The 5G World Alliance (5GWA) is to take a holistic, integrated approach across all technologies in order to gain support for seamless worldwide networking interoperability – empowering the end user through a truly end-to-end experience.

Heterogeneous Networks – How complex can they get?

It’s no secret that mobile networks are under tremendous stress, and data capacity is at an all-time high. Consumers want and require constant connectivity and the standards have become very high, making operators play catch-up with the higher set of expectations from customers.

Take airport Wi-Fi as an example…just a few years ago it did not even exist, and today, customers are outraged when it is not available or it is of poor quality. The feeling has become that Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity and the ability to connect is no longer a service, but a common human right.

5G is the search for a new paradigm; one that will support society for another 20 years. Therefore, 5G will be defined by the new business architecture on top of technical advancements to maximize the potential of mobile radio communication.

Will 5G require an overhaul of current network architectures, or will it be an evolution?

LTE World Summit 2014 – Day Two Round-up

Day Two of the LTE World Summit was introduced by Adrian Scrase, CTO, ETSI; Head of Mobile Competence Centre, 3GPP, who got everyone going with a rousing run through of the work that the 3GPP is currently doing on LTE standards. In all seriousness it was useful to get an update, and the stand out item was that 3GPP is indeed starting to own on standards for operating LTE in unlicensed spectrum bands at 5.8GHz. It is also beginning a study on the use of NFV in a mobile environment and expects that to finished by the beginning of 2016.

As for 5G, Scrase seemed surprised by the background noise of 5G discussions and said that standardization work won’t even start until 2016, so wouldn’t expect that any live 5G services would be running before the end of the decade.

Tell that to SK Telekom who is planning a 5G, or at least ‘pre-5G’ launch in South Korea in time for the Winter Olympics. I first heard this from SK Telecom at the Mobile World Conference in February, and it was reiterated here by Park Jin-Hyo, SVP & Head of Network Technology R&D Center for SK Telecom.

There seemed a genuine buzz from the floor to hear JinHyo’s presentation, and by the end of it you felt SK Telecom’s reputation as a telecoms leader was justified. The operator has 99 per cent coverage in its home market, (OK, I suppose!) and it has introduced Category 6 handsets (up to 300Mbps). What was great to hear was the description of its VoLTE service, with calls established on one second, and LTE Advanced – where it was touting the new services it could offer on it, including UHD 3480×2160 4K streaming, – which does beg the question – how big are its data packages?

LTE World Summit 2014 – Day One Round-Up

Once again the LTE World Summit returned to the sunny streets on Amsterdam, or at least to the interior of the RAI exhibition centre, which is nearly as good. This time up on stage a live Twitter feed was visible behind the speakers, providing an opportunity for those in the audience to get their Tweet up on the big screen in real-time – always a thrill.

Proceedings were kicked off by Erik Hoving, CTO of KPN. Hoving reiterated a theme that he has expressed before from this platform – that operators need to move away from specifications and become more people centric.

“We need to figure out the role of the smartphone,” he said. “The future isn’t about LTE or 5G, it’s about users. If we don’t understand users, we don’t have a role to play. We need to move to a user centric world.”

We speak to Zhang Jianguo, VP of ZTE Corporation

In recent years the global market for LTE network deployment and construction has grown quickly. What has ZTE been doing in terms of LTE?

 ZTE has signed 145 LTE\EPC contracts and is one of the world’s top three LTE suppliers. At present we are in approximately 70 percent of countries that have invested in LTE. We have successfully launched commercial LTE services for operators including Bharti, China Mobile, China Telecom, Hutchison, Softbank, Telenor, TeliaSonera, VimpelCom, and Vodafone.

In the international market, ZTE is working with VimpelCom, KPN, Telenor and other multinational telecom operators in the development of commercial LTE networks in Russia, Belgium and Hungary. In addition, we are helping major international operators implement commercial 4G strategies and build high-quality networks.

According to a recent IHS report, ZTE became the fastest-growing LTE supplier, and the third largest, with over 100,000 LTE eNodeB shipments, accounting for 17.9 percent of the global LTE market.

Frédéric Ruciak, EVP of strategy for Bouygues Telecom will be speaking on a panel dedicated to maximizing revenue from LTE, taking place on one of the conference.

To what extent have you virtualised your network and how important will NFV be in the future?

We have not yet implemented NFV in our network but we think it may be an opportunity in the future. The main benefits will be to reduce costs in our core network and to improve time to market. We think robust and powerful solutions may go live within a three- to five-year timeframe. We’ll be cautious in terms of operations and QoS, because we may potentially move from single vendor platforms, with clear commitment, to layered environments, where we may have interoperability issues and multiple responsibilities.

Zain is launching LTE later this year. What have been the main challenges leading up to this?

Growing the data network is a necessity in order to maintain revenues. Maintaining the value of the company require us to move to LTE. While voice revenues are shrinking, demand for data is increasing. In fact, data is becoming the main selling point and customer retention factor. Additionally, there is the need to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks to ensure massive capacity and massive connectivity.

In this interview ahead of the LTE World Summit, Park Jin-Hyo, SVP & Head of Network Technology at the R&D Center, SK Telecom, tells us how the Korean operator is taking a lead on virtualization and gives us a glimpse of what benefits a fully-fledged VoLTE and LTE Advanced network can bring end-users.

Do you feel any pressure for SK Telecom to be leaders in the network technology space?

With the world’s first commercialization of CDMA, multi-carrier, VoLTE, and LTE-Advanced, SK Telecom has been a pioneer in developing mobile network technologies. Rather than pressure, we feel pride for pursuing the best customer experience through providing leading and differentiated technologies.

To what extent have you virtualised your network and how important will NFV be in the future?

Our ultimate goal is to virtualize all telecommunications equipment in implementing software. However, considering the possible impact on the existing network, in 2014 we plan to start with IMS, telecommunications infrastructure to provide HD Voice, as it is based on a general-purpose hardware server and therefore easier to apply virtualization technology.

After validating performance and stability of IT virtualization, we will continue to virtualize other network equipment as well. Going beyond virtualization of core network functions, we plan to apply the technology on base stations, the access point with customer, eventually aiming to innovate the whole structure of telecommunications infrastructure.

By applying NFV technology, a MNO can efficiently cope with ever-increasing data traffic by securing flexible network structure, apply new services at an incomparably faster pace and, as hardware and software will be separated also provide more business opportunities to SMEs. As such, SK Telecom believes that NFV technology will become a key enabler in its mid-to-long term network structure innovation.

What’s the latest on Telstra’s LTE network? For example, at what stage are your plans for LTE Advanced and VoLTE?

Telstra has been amongst the world leaders in pushing LTE-Advanced. We have done a number of trials on our network of carrier aggregation, including a world first in May this year in aggregating three 2x20MHz FDD bands between 1,800MHz (1 band) and 2,600MHz (2 bands) to achieve live network speeds of 450Mbps. We have also tested carrier aggregation across the 700MHz and 1,800MHz bands. We continue to evaluate the use of VoLTE in our network but at this stage, do not see any compelling reason to deploy it urgently.

Please tell me more about the 5G Innovation Centre? What are its aims and how it came to be based at the University of Surrey?

The 5GIC (5G Innovation Center) programme is the result of a  successful funding bid made by the University of Surrey in 2012 to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), under the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) for the creation of a sustainable and specialised 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC). The 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated 5G programme and an international hub for telecommunication research and innovation with a unique large scale 5G test-bed for network testing.  The centre collaborates with key telecom service providers, network and device manufacturers and test equipment solution providers to create a facility that develops solutions and standards for 5G networks worldwide and generates significant downstream benefits for parties involved, the wider economy, and the community.

Although 5G is still just a vague concept, the hype around this next generation technology continues with EE and NTT DoCoMo both recently in the news showcasing their activities in this space.

Last week, NTT DoCoMo announced their plans for major 5G trials in an attempt to demonstrate the potential of 5G mobile technologies at frequency bands above 6GHz. The operator plans to collaborate with six of the industry’s leading equipment vendors – Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokia and Samsung – each running in parallel on a specific trial as part of an overall proof of concept.

Furthermore, here in the UK, although we’re only just getting to grips with 4G (with even this being a long way off for most), EE have already shown signs that they’re already on the countdown to 5G.

Unlicensed LTE: surely a contradiction in terms? How does this work and how what problems could it solve?

LTE-U is not a contradiction but a different way of using a technology that is primarily designed to be controlled/managed, in order to leverage the significant amount of unlicensed spectrum, to address exploding demand for mobile data capacity. Depending on how the solution is approached the added complexity may be limited, or large.

Perhaps the simplest and least intrusive way to allow LTE-U operation is to use it as a supplementary carrier to opportunistically expand the effective user plane bandwidth of a licensed primary LTE carrier, which may more predictably carry control plane signaling. The LTE-U supplementary carrier may be configured/activated dynamically through primary carrier for use as a downlink only, uplink only and TDD mode, in an unlicensed or shared spectrum. Some companies are proposing concepts aligned with this approach, while some may be considering a more Wi-Fi-like operation, which requires more changes.

5G Already?

Some interesting thoughts here on what 5G could become. As is pointed out, spectrum, antenna design, proximity to the cell tower and device chipset size will all come into play.

POTs and PANs

Cell-Tower We knew it was coming and the wireless industry is already bantering about the term 5G. Nobody knows exactly what it is going to be, but the consensus is that it’s going to be fast. The South Koreans are devoting $1.5 billion in research to develop the next generation wireless. And there are vendors like Samsung who are already starting to claim that the upgrades in their labs today are 5G.

And of course, all of this is hype. There is still not any broadband anywhere that complies to the original 4G specifications. This all got out of hand when the marketing groups started to tout 3G performance for networks that were not yet at the 3G specs. And then came 3.5 G and 4G, and now I guess 5G.

But let’s look at the one claim that it seems 5G is going to have, which is blistering fast speeds…

5G is fast becoming one of the key talking points dominating the telco space and was one of the major themes to come out of this year’s MWC. Despite the fact that 5G dominated numerous discussions at MWC, there is indeed still much uncertainty over what 5G actually is.

Many argue that 5G is just a buzzword, however the level of debate around 5G at MWC indicates that it is no longer just a marketing ploy but is moving towards becoming something much more substantial with a growing number of associations and research institutions paving the way from LTE to 5G.
