Ahead of the 5G World Summit 2015, taking place on 24-25th June in Amsterdam, Mikio Iwamura, Director NTT DoCoMo & NGMN Work Stream lead, gives us his current views on the requirements of 5G networks and the services enabled by it!
Here is what Mikio says ““5G” seems to encompass different aspects and you will probably get ten different answers if you talk to ten different people. “5G” is a convenient term and everyone wants to talk about it, but after all, it will just be a marketing term. Companies will use the term “5G” to encompass whatever they want to call “5G” when the time comes.
I think it is about time the industry needs to define concrete terms that represent different components of “5G”. For example, 3GPP will need to define a term that represents a new radio access technology, that will potentially have access to the IMT-2020 spectrum, once approved by ITU-R. This will be a 5G equivalent of “LTE” or “E-UTRA/ E-UTRAN”. 3GPP may also need to think what they will call LTE enhancements, beyond Rel-13. Another aspect is the future core network. Including NGMN, various consortia and companies are promoting the “network slicing” concept, that brings along more cost efficient and agile ways of provisioning services with disparate requirements by use of NFV and SDN technologies. The industry will need a new name to address the system that has this capability. This will be like “EPC” or “EPS”, but I think “packet” will not be the keyword here. Something along the lines of “poly-morphic system” seems to better describe the concept.

The emerging markets of Asia (EMAP) could soon be the most important LTE markets in the World.
All eyes are on the emerging markets of Asia Pacific; countries including Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam among others, as they begin to deploy and expand their LTE networks.
Studies show that EMAP is set to outstrip the developing markets of Asia Pacific (Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia) in terms of LTE subscribers by 2017, creating a tremendous opportunity for LTE players across the region. As demand grows, users will require connectivity throughout the region, meaning more complex networks, better service and competitive rates across the board. (more…)

According to a GSMA Intelligence study, global LTE connections will hit the 1-billion mark by 2017 and Asia will account for almost half, or 47 percent of that. The demand for high speed connections and rich media experience is keeping operators on their toes and constantly upgrading and building more efficient LTE networks. As operators work towards keeping high levels of subscriber satisfaction, network coverage and capacity becomes utmost concern.
I have been in the telecommunications industry for nearly three decades and these developments are extremely exciting. At the LTE Asia Conference, which took place from September 24-25 in Singapore, I was happy to share a presentation titled “Antennas Solutions for Capacity Improvement” in which I addressed concerns related to maximizing network capacity and developing unified industry standards for base-station antennas.
Tropo, an API that makes it simple to build phone, SMS and Instant messaging applications was picked as the winner of the Innovation Accelerator at the recent LTE Asia conference. In this interview with Fuxin Jiao-Kiuru, APAC General Manager for Tropo, we find out what the award means to them and why API development is so important in the telecoms space.
You won the Innovation Accelerator at LTE Asia. Why do you think your product attracted the attention of the judges?
Tropo bridges the gaps between telco and web development spaces, making fast innovation in communication possible. I believe the reason we won is that we are not only talking about great technology, but also real customers, real applications in the market, and real innovation and we bring in great value. In the region, both China Telecom and Globe Philippines are already using Tropo with their eco-system partners. So we are not just talking about it, we are innovating with our customers and partners as we speak.
What are the main challenges you expect to face over the next 12-18 months?
Once again the great and the good in the Telecoms industry were present for the latest Telecoms.com awards, held for the first time at the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore. After a cocktail reception filled with glitz and champagne the winners were finally revealed to an expectant audience. Well done to all the nominees and especially to the winners!

Think about what is going on in the APJC Mobile Market for a minute:
- In Korea Mobile data traffic on 2G, 3G, and 4G networks increased approximately 70 per cent between 3Q 2012 and 3Q 2013.
- In China : Mobile data traffic of China’s top three mobile operators grew 90 per cent in 2012 and 72 per cent from mid-2012 to mid-2013.
- In Japan, Mobile data traffic grew 92 per cent in 2012 and 66 per cent from 3Q 2012 to 3Q 2013, according to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
- While in India Bharti Airtel reported mobile data traffic growth of 112 per cent between 3Q 2012 and 3Q 2013 and Reliance Communications reported mobile data traffic growth of 116 per cent between 3Q 2012 and 3Q 2013.’Nomophobia’ is a term describing a growing fear in today’s world — the fear of being without a mobile device, or beyond mobile phone contact, which is why analysts report that 91 per cent of us keep their cell phone within three feet of themselves 24/7.

Do you actually voice roaming when you’re abroad?
When you’re calling somebody from the LTE Asia 2014 venue, or when you sit in Starbucks on the high-street, or when you’re relaxing in your hotel room—or even when you’re surfing on the sunny Maldives beach, – you generally would use free Wi-Fi and Skype.
Recently, the EU introduced new regulations that cap prices for roaming phone calls leading operators, especially in the EU region facing fears of (even more) reduced revenues. They have to reduce prices, whilst maintain existing systems.

What was the original thinking behind the creation of your winning entry?
Since Optus entered the Australian market just over 20 years ago, our unwavering focus on innovation and customer experience has underpinned our investment in our network.
We see 4G as the chance to further highlight that Optus is an innovative and competitive alternative in Australia. We see our first-to-market launch of 700MHz LTE in Australia as a launching pad for Optus’ extension of our LTE network beyond metropolitan centres and into regional Australia.

LTE roaming is starting to become a reality – what are the main challenges to making it happen?
The main challenge is having a reliable IPX provider with a flexible core network infrastructure to interconnect MNOs that can tailor itself to their needs. Telekom Austria Group’s global IPX network guarantees our customers global LTE roaming coverage by exchanging traffic with their roaming partner networks worldwide.

What are your broader challenges that you expect to face over the next five years?
Communications service providers will have to meet ever increasing customer expectations, especially in terms of offering products and services that are relevant to customers’ needs and which they value. We also have to continuously innovate and maintain an always-connected, reliable network.
Singapore is not short of bandwidth compared to many countries. What is the plan to monetize it all?

Seunghyun Sung, General Manager, LG U+ is speaking on the subject of how the Korean operator has led the way on implementing VoLTE on Day One of the second annual LTE Voice Summit, taking place on October 7th-8th 2014 at the Royal Garden Hotel, London. Here she gives us some hints on how VoLTE can add to customer satisfaction and enable it to compete with OTT providers.
What are you expecting and hoping for from the commercial launch on VoLTE?
We currently provide seamless and intelligent communication experiences to our customers through our commercial VoLTE network. Since our customers use voice call features in an LTE environment, by making full use of the advantages that LTE/VoLTE technology provides we are able to offer many differentiated features. For example, we have a service called Uwa, which enables users to have a phone conversation, while using third-party apps for gaming, web surfing etc.
As we approach commercial launch is there any clearer idea of whether VoLTE will truly compete or just complement OTT services?

You’ve been nominated at the inaugural LTE Asia awards for two awards. Why do you think your products have attracted the attention of the judges?
Singapore’s vibrant economy necessitates a fast and reliable mobile connectivity. SingTel has more than 130 years of operating experience and has played a pivotal role in the country’s development as a major communications hub. We are Singapore’s leading mobile operator with the largest customer base and share of mobile revenue and SingTel continues to serve its customers with the best that technology has to offer. The latest LTE technology is one such example. SingTel was the first to bring in LTE service to the Singapore market in Dec 2011 and was the first to launch LTE with speeds of up to 150Mbps through cutting edge MIMO technology.
Recently, SingTel also pushed the boundaries further by working closely with our handset partner, Samsung and network vendor, Ericsson to introduce two of the world’s first commercial service, fully featured VoLTE service with a full suite of telephony services, and also a 300Mbps smartphone service based on LTE-Advanced technology.

What are the primary opportunities and challenges for your region over the next three years?
The Asia Pacific region accounts for over 50% of the world’s mobile subscribers, with mobile penetration expected to reach 89% by the end of 2014. Fuelled by increasingly affordable smart devices, the rate of adoption of mobile broadband is increasing alongside with mobile penetration as networks are being upgraded to next generation platforms. Additionally, 44% of global fixed broadband subscriptions are from the Asia Pacific with some Asian countries such as Singapore having introduced high speed broadband network such as fibre broadband. These indicate that there are both opportunities and challenges in the region, as there is a large and still-growing data-hungry consumer base.

Asia Pacific users lead in mobile traffic consumption. With the popularity of streaming via apps from YouTube, Youku and PPStream, users in the region on average download 1.1 GB of data per month.– According to a GSMA study, by 2015 this number will only increase and there will be more than 120 million LTE subscribers in the Asia Pacific region.
Between the leading-edge Asian Tigers of Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and the emerging markets of Southeast Asia, China and South Asia, a number of challenges have surfaced for mobile networks in the region.
This leads to issues like spectrum and cell-site scarcity as well as the speed of network modernization.

What is your mission and what are the main challenges you are facing in delivering wireless broadband?
Our mission is to provide affordable broadband to all, so that they can experience the best of the Internet. We have been operating using WiMAX technology for more than five years and are currently in the planning stages for transition to TD-LTE. Our aim is to provide high-speed broadband service to end users no matter what technologies we are using.
Air interface management is always challenging, especially when the frequency band is above 2GHz. Then deep indoor seamless coverage becomes one of the major challenges. Other than that, end user demand for high volume content has increased significantly in last few years. With limited wireless resources, capacity management is a vital point for us. Development of LTE is now real and there are numerous live networks around the world, we expect we will be able to meet the user demand with LTE deployment.
How has the TD-LTE eco-system progressed over the last 12 months and what are your expectations for the next couple of years?

What are the broad challenges that you expect to face over the next five years?
For developing country like Bangladesh, the key challenge is to make LTE a profitable business case for the operators. In Bangladesh, we still have very low Internet usage and the use of data is just not up to the mark, mostly due to lack of local content and overpriced Internet bandwidth at consumer level. Therefore, the challenge is more on socio-economic part rather than technical.
What is your strategy for increasing consumer uptake of LTE services?

What are the major challenges that you believe you will face over the next couple of years?
The Philippines has a lot of potential, not just in the area of broadband but as a nation. With economic growth still moving at a higher pace than most of our neighbours, the Philippines is a good growth story.
Recently we’ve had a major typhoon that hit us, and who knows how the environment will fair in the years to come. One challenge we need to address is disaster-preparedness, how quickly can we respond and reduce customer downtime.
The other challenge we see is how strategically can we evolve as a company to be at the centre of the digital life of our customers? This is all about moving beyond dumb pipes and becoming more relevant to our customers’ day-to-day activities.

Operators in South Korea seem more willing and able to invest in next-gen technologies earlier than many Western operators? Why do you think this is so?
South Korea has the world-leading manufacturers of smart devices – such as Samsung and LG – and implemented nationwide LTE network sporting the best quality and functionality. But mobile subscribers have been already saturated. The Korean operators, SKT, KT, and LGU+, could not survive in the market just with existing technology and can only beat the competition with new technologies and services. As a result, South Korea has become the world test-bed for next generation technologies.
Following on from that would you say South Korean customers are more willing to try, and pay for, new mobile services?

Are billing systems keeping pace with changes in how MNOs now charge for data?
Billing vendors are trying to keep up with the phenomenal growth of data and the need to support different charging mechanisms. However, the data market dynamics are such that it makes them hard to cope with these changes and implement them in a short time. The constant billing system updates also comes at a cost, with which most of MNOs are not willing to keep up. We believe the flexibility in billing platforms should be increased, thus enabling MNOs to create their own service/charging logic without going through the pain of frequent investing in billing platforms.

How is P1 progressing with the launch of LTE-based services?
P1 is in the midst of completing a strategic investment agreement and joint collaboration between Malaysia’s leading broadband player, Telekom Malaysia Berhad and its existing stakeholders; founder Green Packet Berhad and South Korea’s SK Telecom for the rollout of LTE. The transaction is anticipated to be completed by Q3, and the teams have come together to do extensive planning.
What is your strategy to move from WiMAX to TD-LTE?
P1’s WiMAX network will continue to provide broadband services to customers as a parallel LTE network is built out. Once WiMAX customers have migrated out over a number of years, P1 expects to use the 2.3Ghz spectrum as an additional capacity band to meet the growing data demands of customers. However, the use of the spectrum would be subject to local regulatory approval.
