Lack of spectrum availability is still one of the issues concerning operators as Yasser Abouelenein, CTO of Uganda Telecom (Lap Green Group) tells us ahead of his keynote address at the opening day of the 4th annual LTE MENA conference is taking place on the 11th-13th May 2014 at the Conrad, Dubai, UAE.

What are the major challenges to upgrading your network to LTE?

The major challenges for upgrading the current network to LTE could be summarised as per the following:

a)      The availability of the spectrum.

b)      The availability of the high bandwidth that will be really required by LTE users.

c)       The penetration of handsets that support LTE.

Does enhancing backhaul links go hand-in-hand with LTE and what are the challenges there?

Of course this is a mandatory thing for the introduction of the LTE, as we have to make sure that the practical needed bandwidth will be available to get the right experience of using the LTE.

What is the single most significant or interesting technology that you think will have an impact in the next 12 months?

I believe that using the LTE as Wi-Fi backhaul will be the most interesting technology in the next 12 months, especially in the MENA region.

How do you expect networks to adapt and change over the next five years and how will it impact lives?

I believe that networks are going to focus on the small cells where the LTE microcell and the wireless combined backhaul will be the preferred solution. This will have a direct impact on enriching the customer experience and feeling the value added of having the LTE as a new adopted technology that will be implemented only where it will be needed.

What are you most looking forward to at the LTE MENA conference?

I am looking at the LTE MENA conference as an ideal venue of exchanging the experience and to know about the different experience of other operators and suppliers. How can we take the best approach to introduce the LTE in a way to maximize the profit of the operator and to enrich the customer experience at an affordable price?
