Michael Freiberger, Principle Member, Technical Staff, Verizon is speaking on the subject of LTE’s backhaul design on Day One of the LTE North America conference, taking place on the 21st-22nd November 2013, in Dallas, Texas, USA.

How is data usage continuing to develop on your network, and how much of your data usage now goes over LTE?

Verizon’s 4G LTE network now covers 95 per cent of the U.S. population with speeds in the 10 to 12 megabit range. At last count, we have close to 50 LTE-enabled smartphones, tablets and Internet devices. Considering that voice calls currently reside in a separate band, the 10-12 megabit capacity capability of LTE is being used for data and video. Verizon is pushing hard for VoLTE deployments.

As LTE continues to be deployed globally, do you feel that some operators are failing to understand that impact that LTE will have on backhaul requirements?

Each operator has to study its network and services and determine optimal backhaul requirements for its own situation.  Verizon has studied its network and services and found that a wide variety and the highest quality of backhaul products are required to meet our needs.

What are the key technology choices you are currently using for backhaul, and how do you think these will evolve into the future?

Verizon is an active partner with the research community in developing new technologies for backhaul. The technologies we are developing include leveraging our investments in our FiOS network for use in the wireless backhaul network, as well as deploying small cells.

At what stage are you at for LTE Advanced and what features of it will you be implementing first?

It is early in Verizon’s LTE Advanced deployment and features such as carrier aggregation will be deployed where needed to meet Verizon’s strategy.

What are you most looking forward to with regards to attending the LTE North America conference?

LTE NA provides an opportunity for professional networking, and I look forward to meeting others in the LTE industry.
